Living the Lessons: The Gift of Collaborative Leadership

Living the Lessons: The Gift of Collaborative Leadership

Guest post by Milinda Martin [Editor’s Note: I first met Milinda via social media, where we quickly discovered a common passion for and commitment to women’s empowerment, civic engagement and sustainability. A gracious and collaborative leader, she later invited me to participate in a national webinar for Time Warner Cable in collaboration with others from the TWC team, Anna Falth of UN Women’s EmpowerWomen.org, and Karen Peterson of the National Girls Collaborative Project. Always willing to support, uplift and engage with others, Milinda truly personifies what it means to be an authentic, humble and collaborative leader.]  I have worked hard for my career, spending the better part of fifteen years as a single mother, trying to excel at raising my children, while rising up the work ladder at the same time. Influencing Change: The Role of Radical Collaboration in Women’s Empowerment

Interview with Professor Linda Scott, DP World Chair for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, on the power of collaboration in the fight for gender equality and women and girls’ empowerment. [Editor’s Note: I first connected with Professor Scott through my online engagement and advocacy for women’s economic empowerment — recently inviting her to lend her own voice to the Global Girls Project and share her perspective on the important role collaboration plays in both women’s leadership and empowerment. A leading author, authority and voice for gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, and entrepreneurship, Professor Scott’s innovative and collaborative approach has enabled her to forge key partnerships that have resulted in meaningful and impactful change — addressing key development issues ranging from access to sanitary care to mobile technology, while advancing economic opportunities for women worldwide.] (Sharon): In a panel discussion you participated in earlier this year, you spoke of ‘radical collaboration’ as a route to empowerment of women worldwide. What does collaboration mean to you and why is it...

Finding Strength in the Vulnerability of Collaboration

Finding Strength in the Vulnerability of Collaboration

Guest post by Kaela Frank When I was nine years old my parents split up, and as I was just beginning to discover myself, I watched my mother struggle to find herself again. I have never been married myself, but I learned from my mother that when we wed our dreams to another’s, we have to make sacrifices. Sometimes we make so many sacrifices that we lose ourselves. After the divorce, I watched my mother search for a job that would give her purpose in addition to a paycheck. I watched as she rebuilt her home and community. I watched as she slowly opened herself up to love again. My mother is my definition of strength — the type of strength that comes through hardship and hard work, but also humility and vulnerability. Sometimes the pain we experience in life hardens us. My mother told me that I should never rely on someone else to provide for me, because one day they might leave, and where would that leave...
